For veterans and families
How VA housing grants work, and where we fit in.
The VA process has several steps. Here is a plain-language overview of the SAH and SHA process, based on VA’s published guidance for veterans and builders.
The SAH and SHA process, step by step.
Check eligibility and apply with VA
Apply for SAH or SHA online or with VA Form 26-4555 (how to apply). For HISA, start with your VA medical center’s Prosthetics service (HISA on VA.gov).
Meet your SAH Agent
If you qualify for SAH or SHA, a VA SAH Agent visits your home and talks with you about the adaptations you need.
Get bids and choose your builder
VA generally asks for at least three bids, and you choose the builder. Our bid shows how we would use the space, how we would meet VA’s requirements, a sketch, and a detailed estimate.
Plans and contract
We prepare the plans, specifications and cost breakdown with you. VA reviews the package and must give final approval before any work begins.
Construction
Work proceeds in stages under local building permits. VA reviews the completed work at each stage before releasing that stage’s payment.
Final walkthrough
VA completes its final review, the last payment is released, and the finished space is yours to use.
HISA
Smaller projects through your VA medical center.
The Home Improvements and Structural Alterations (HISA) benefit is handled by VA health care, not the SAH office. It covers medically necessary changes such as permanent ramps, roll-in showers and lowered counters. A VA provider documents the medical need, and the veteran submits VA Form 10-0103 with an itemized estimate. We can prepare that estimate.
